Where is Golden Hare Books?
Golden Hare Books is in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh’s New Town, which has a vibrant atmosphere with a real village community feel. You can find out exactly where we are on our Location & Opening Hours page.
What kind of books does the shop sell?
Golden Hare stocks a range of fiction, non-fiction and children’s titles, specialising only in bringing the most beautiful, interesting and unusual titles. Not everything is really obscure, but we handpick every book carefully to ensure we have the very best books in every category right now. There is a good range of newly released books as well as backlist titles.
Why is the shop called Golden Hare Books?
The original plan was for the bookshop to be entirely stocked with children’s books, and the initial name for the store would be ‘The Golden Crocodile’, or another unusual animal! Then the shop’s designer (who is a member of the family) arrived one day with a papier mache hare, which seemed perfect, and Golden Hare Books was born!
How long has the Golden Hare been open?
Golden Hare Books began in the Grassmarket area of Edinburgh in the Old Town, where it opened in the summer of 2012. After two wonderful years there, the bookshop relocated to the beautiful area of Stockbridge, where we’ve been since 2014, and we love it here!
Is Golden Hare Books wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately not at the moment, though this is something we will definitely look into in the future. There are a few steps up from street level to the shop door, but no steps inside.
How can I find out more about events at the shop?
You can check our frequently updated Events Calendar, or sign up to our mailing list at the top/bottom of this page to be kept up-to-date!
Do I need to pay to attend events?
This depends on the event. Many of our events, such as book launches and author talks, are free. For some events we charge each guest a small fee to put towards wine/food expenditure, and for courses or workshops where more materials are required the price will be higher. You can find full details about event prices, etc. through our Event Calendar, and all tickets, free or otherwise, can be booked through the website.
Can I join the Book Group?
Certainly! The book group meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 6.30pm in Golden Hare Books. It’s free to come along and we’ll have wine, nibbles and a good discussion about the monthly book. The discussion usually lasts 1-1.5 hours. And, you get 15% off the next book group title when you buy it in-store or online.
Can I host an event with Golden Hare Books?
At Golden Hare we love holding events, and we hold some at the bookshop, others elsewhere, depending on number of attendees. If you’d like to hold an event at the shop, or use Golden Hare Books to sell books at your event, please feel free to get in touch.
You can find out more about our events policy here.
When will the online shop be live?
We hope to have the online shop up and running by the middle of November, in plenty time for Christmas. Customers will be able to have their books delivered to their home, or to Golden Hare Books if they prefer.
Not all the books we sell will be available online (at least to begin with), but we hope to have a broad range of books that we feel are representative of the shop. We have so many visitors who say they’d like to buy from us all the time but live far away, so we hope this means they still feel part of the Golden Hare experience.
