Saturday 8th October 2016 was the Books Are My Bag campaign’s Big Bookshop Party, and for the first time this was to be known as Bookshop Day! Bookshops and customers around the country used the hashtag #BookshopDay to celebrate buying physical books in physical bookshops. And if ever we needed confirmation that people love shopping for books in our bookshop, it was yesterday!
Families, couples and individuals came by throughout the day to enjoy live clarsach music, the wood-burning stove, fresh cafetiere coffee and macarons from the local Patisserie Madeleine. We nearly ran out of our copious supply of those distinctive orange Books Are My Bag bags and took lots of entries for our Coralie Bickford-Smith prize draw, in which one lucky winner will win a limited edition tote bag, a copy of The Fox and the Star and two Penguin Clothbound Classics of his/her choice, all illustrated by the wonderful Coralie Bickford-Smith.
Later in the day we had live poetry performances from Andrew Blair and Ross McCleary, who are the minds behind Poets Against Humanity, and you can buy Ross’s first book, Portrait of the Artist as a Viable Alternative to Death. People really loved the spoken word as they watched or browsed the shelves.
All in all it was a wonderful day, and one of the busiest in the Golden Hare’s recent memory! We’re already excited about what tomorrow, which centres mainly around children’s crafts, will bring. Do come by and see us!
