Samarkand in the bookshop

Golden Hare Books was turned into a Central Asian oasis yesterday evening, with sights, sounds and smells from the region including baked goods, music and fabrics from the region throughout the shop!

This was all because last night we hosted a fantastic event with travel journalist and new author Caroline Eden, whose travelogue-come-cookbook Samarkand: Recipes & Stories from Central Asia & the Caucasus was released earlier this year to critical acclaim. Caroline kindly baked non bread and prepared dips from the cookbook to serve at the event, which went down a treat!

It was a packed house as Caroline described her travels in Samarkand, what it was like to be in such a different part of the world, where few people speak English and the culture is so disparate from the West. There were more questions for her than I’ve ever seen at a literary event – and all of them were very insightful – and considering this was a standing event in the bookshop this shows real interest!

Thanks to Caroline and her publisher Kyle Books, and also to our local wine merchants Vino for providing the delicious refreshments.
