Golden Hare Books may not be a large shop, but its three rooms are arranged to display the very best of Non-Fiction, Fiction and Children’s books respectively.
In these rooms you’ll find themed displays, hand-written recommendations by our booksellers and unusual books you’re unlikely to have seen elsewhere, so everything you need in Independent Bookshop Edinburgh. What’s more, many of the books are placed on long display shelves ‘face-out’, much like in a gallery, in order to show as many books as possible in all their glory.
We want the shop to be an experience from the moment you walk up the steps and through the door. Start in your favourite section, be it Fiction, Non-Fiction or Children’s, or go through the shop systematically, shelf-by-shelf, or as sporadically as you please!
There will always be new books for our customers to explore, so the experience will never be quite the same twice. Chat to our booksellers for recommendations tailored to your tastes and needs. And now you can enjoy a free filter coffee while you browse!
Spot our special gilded hare as you walk along St Stephen Street and you’ll know exactly where to find us! Our door is always open between 10am and 6pm, if it’s cold the wood-burning stove is on and coffee will be brewing. Come on in and enjoy the books…
The first room you’ll find yourself in is Non-Fiction. To your right, a wall of faced-out hardbacks serves as a companion piece to the rest of the room, showing off the newest and finest real-life writing available.
On the other side of the room are shelves with far more books, including Art & Photography, Architecture & Design, Cookery & Lifestyle, Biography, Criticism, Politics, Philosophy, History, Travel and Nature and more…
Next up, the Fiction Room. This is the largest of the sections in Golden Hare Books, and consists of a large display table showcasing new fiction on one side and classic fiction on the other, with two temporary displays in between. You’ll also find a log fire to warm up against during cold days whilst you browse.
Most of this room is taken up with Fiction A-Z by author, but you’ll also find a bay dedicated to short stories, one for poetry and another for young adult fiction. We’re a big fan of graphic novels so they have their own shelf space too, as well as a dedicated display area. Lastly there is a half-wall showcasing the finest hardback fiction our store has to offer.
Last but certainly not least is the Children’s Room, which we are constantly finding new ways to make as cosy and inviting as possible for children of all ages to browse by themselves, or to read a story! We’ll always display the newest and most beautiful children’s books available, and you’re sure to find a perfect gift for the little one in your life you couldn’t get elsewhere.
From board books and picture books for the very young to special editions, classics and new fiction for older children, the Children’s Room is a special place that kids (and grown-ups) look forward to visiting over and over again.
