Golden Hare Books is delighted to announce that we will be welcoming Victoria Hendry to the shop on Tuesday 18 November to discuss her debut novel, A Capital Union, which was recently nominated for the Historical Writers’ Association Debut Crown Award 2014.
Set in Edinburgh during the Second World War, A Capital Union
is a historical novel with a very contemporary resonance, dealing as it does with the schism that threatened to tear apart the Scottish National Party during Great Britain’s darkest hour. War is tightening its grip on the world as newlyweds Agnes and Jeff Thorne fall under the spell of the Scottish National Party’s charismatic new chairman, Douglas Grant. When the Home Rule movement splits over the issue of conscription, Jeff abandons his work on a Scottish dictionary to fight to save himself and Douglas from prison, while Agnes discovers a secret that challenges her own understanding of love, loyalty and national identity.
A Capital Union is a ‘startlingly accomplished’ (Sunday Herald) debut novel with ‘explosive moments of real poetry and narrative power’ (Alan Warner) that transports the reader to the vanished world of wartime Edinburgh while raising profound questions about the nature of union,
both political and personal, that are as relevant today as they were then.
As ever this event is free but we would advise you to book in advance through our Eventbrite page.
