Among the Summer Snows with Christopher Nicholson
October 3 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm£4 – £8.99
Golden Hare Books welcomes Christopher Nicholson to discuss his new book on Scottish landscape, Among the Summer Snows. Join us for a glass of wine and a discussion of the elusive and romantic fragments of snow which dot our highest mountains even in the hottest summers.
‘That there should still be any snow in Britain during the summer is strange. Summer is a season for easy living, a time of bees and foxgloves, roses and honeysuckle, light clothes and gentle breezes. Yet snow, a little snow, survives in the Highlands of Scotland.’
An extraordinary account of an unusual passion. One August Christopher Nicholson set off to the Scottish mountains on a series of walks in search of the last remaining snowbeds, some as big as icebergs. Among the Summer Snows is both a celebration of these icy relics and a personal meditation on mountains and time, snow and seeing. The result is a surprising and uplifting journey that explores the meanings of nature, beauty and death in the twenty-first century.
Christopher Nicholson was once a scriptwriter and producer for the BBC World Service. For the past thirty years he has lived in Dorset. He has written three novels, including The Elephant Keeper, which was shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award, and Winter, described by Alison Lurie in the New York Review of Books as ‘one of the most dramatically convincing and moving Famous Writer Novels I have ever read.’
