They say that all autobiographies are fictional and all fiction is autobiographical. In her memoir A Book of Untruths Miranda Doyle probes the grey area where truth and lies meet, and where stories have very real consequences. Join us to celebrate the Scottish launch of this courageously honest book!
About the book
Each short chapter in A Book of Untruths is built around a lie. Cumulatively, the lies build to tell the tale of Doyle’s ever complicated family and, set against that backdrop, her own life. Mixing memoir with scientific and psychological research, A Book of Untruths explores what happens when we do not tell the truth. Harrowing at times and hilarious at others, it offers up an exquisitely crafted portrait of love, family and marriage. A book which presents as many questions as it does answers, it’s also an ode to and exploration of storytelling.
Miranda Doyle’s family come from the tiny island of Coney in Sligo Bay. She grew up in Edinburgh alongside three brothers and a suspiciously high number of ill-fated pets. With an MA from Goldsmiths in Creative and Life Writing she has lectured on Autobiography for the Philosophy and European Literature degree at Anglia Ruskin University and continues to teach creative writing.
About the event
As well as reading from her memoir, Miranda will be chatting to Literary Dundee’s director and general literary ambassador Peggy Hughes about families, secrets and reliably unreliable memories. And of course, the Golden Hare booksellers will be on hand to welcome you with a glass of wine!
