MAIN BOOK GROUP: “Grief is the Thing with Feathers” by Max Porter
July 30 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pmFree
Our monthly book group has been running since 2012: come along and discuss books!
Our ever-popular, longest running book group runs on the last Tuesday of the month. Run by one of our booksellers, we want people to come and relax in the surrounds of the bookshop with a glass of wine, and enjoy discussing a book. It’s informal, illuminating and a lot of fun!
How it works Reserve a space online for the next book group, or call/email/pop in to the shop to reserve a place. Please…
- let us know in plenty time if you can no longer attend so we can offer your place to someone else.
- turn up on time so we can begin the discussion promptly.
- read the book before coming!
In July we are discussing the Dylan Thomas prize-winning, Goldsmiths Prize shortlisted debut novel by Max Porter Grief is the Thing with Feathers.
In a London flat, two young boys face the unbearable sadness of their mother’s sudden death. Their father, a Ted Hughes scholar and scruffy romantic, imagines a future of well-meaning visitors and emptiness.
In this moment of despair they are visited by Crow – antagonist, trickster, healer, babysitter. This sentimental bird is drawn to the grieving family and threatens to stay until they no longer need him. This extraordinary debut, full of unexpected humour and emotional truth, marks the arrival of a thrilling and significant new talent.
