Short Story Club: “The Lydia Steptoe Stories” by Djuna Barnes (FEMINIST BOOK FORTNIGHT)

May 14 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Short Story Club is our low-commitment, high-reward reading group for those who love short stories and want to hear more of them, and for those who are curious about the shorter form of fiction. We gather around with a glass of wine, one of our booksellers introduces then reads the story in its entirety and then we open up to a group discussion. It’s a brilliant way to meet new people and hear new stories, and we like to think you’ll leave with a brighter view of the world around you. There is something magical about short stories. Come see for yourself!

Katalina will be reading…

“The Lydia Steptoe Stories” by Djuna Barnes

The government has cleaned up Harare for the Queen of England’s visit. ‘The townships are too full of people, they said, gather them up and put them in the places the Queen will not see.’ Four waves of people have settled on Easterly Farm since then, living on the margins in homes that will soon be destroyed. Among them is Martha Mupengo. She has lost her wits, and gained a pregnancy. Who could be the baby’s father, and what fate awaits mothers and children in this temporary, poverty-stricken town? We are delighted to be spending 2019 reading the new series from legendary publisher Faber & Faber of the finest short stories ever: Faber Stories. We’ll be reading a selection of this beautiful new series of short stories new and old, discovering a range of writers you already love and new ones to discover.

“When you read a short story, you come out a little more aware and a little more in love with the world…” — George Saunders

Short Story Club is completely FREE and we advise booking to help us gauge numbers. Please arrive promptly to begin at 6.30pm so there are no interruptions to the reading!
