Short Story Club: “The Game of Smash and Recovery” by Kelly Link

November 13, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

“If Anat did not have Oscar, then who in this world would there be to love? The Handmaids will do whatever Anat asks of them, but they are built to inspire not love but fear.”

This month Short Story Club transports you to a new planet into the work of Kelly Link, a contemporary American writer who is often compared to Angela Carter for her weird, tricksy stories of worlds where something is just a little off… In this case, we’re on a different world altogether, with brother and sister Anat and Oscar as they play hide-and-seek. Join us by the Golden Hare wood-burning stove with a glass of wine in hand and enjoy listening to bookseller Katalina read the story in its entirety, followed by an informal discussion about the themes and ideas in the story. A perfect primer for people looking to get into short stories and/or sci-fi, and if you already love them come along and enjoy! This story is from Kelly Link’s latest story collection Get In Trouble.

Short Story Club is our low-commitment, high-reward reading group for those who love short stories and want to hear more of them, and for those who are curious about the shorter form of fiction. We gather around with a glass of wine, one of our booksellers introduces then reads the story in its entirety and then we open up to a group discussion. It’s a brilliant way to meet new people and hear new stories, and we like to think you’ll leave with a brighter view of the world around you. There is something magical about short stories. Come see for yourself!

“When you read a short story, you come out a little more aware and a little more in love with the world…” — George Saunders

Short Story Club is completely FREE and unticketed. However, please arrive promptly to begin at 6.30pm so there are no interruptions to the reading!
