STARVE ACRE: An Evening with Andrew Michael Hurley

November 7, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

This November, we welcome Costa First Novel Award-winning author Andrew Michael Hurley to the Golden Hare, to discuss his new novel Starve Acre, a haunting story about nature, grief and family. Whether you’ve read Andrew’s novels before or you’re yet to discover this exciting author, you’re in for a treat and we’ll make sure this event is a real winter warmer.

In conversation with David Bloomfield (Golden Hare Bookseller)

Join us in the bookshop for an atmospheric autumnal evening by the wood-burning stove to hear Andrew Michael Hurley discuss Starve Acre, published by John Murray. There will be an audience Q&A and books will be available on sale to be signed.

Wine will be served free of charge!

The worst thing possible has happened. Richard and Juliette Willoughby’s son, Ewan, has died suddenly at the age of five. Starve Acre, their house by the moors, was to be full of life, but is now a haunted place. Juliette, convinced Ewan still lives there in some form, seeks the help of the Beacons, a seemingly benevolent group of occultists. Richard, to try and keep the boy out of his mind, has turned his attention to the field opposite the house, where he patiently digs the barren dirt in search of a legendary oak tree.

Starve Acre is a devastating new novel by the author of the prize-winning bestseller The Loney. It is a novel about
the way in which grief splits the world in two and how, in searching for hope, we can so easily unearth terror.

Andrew Michael Hurley’s first novel, The Loney, was originally published by Tartarus Press as a 300-copy limited edition, before being republished by John Murray. It went on to sell in twenty languages, win the Costa Best First Novel Award and the Book of the Year at the British Book Industry Awards. Devil’s Day, his second novel, was picked as a ‘Book of the Year’ in five newspapers and won the Encore Award for best second novel. He lives in Lancashire. Film rights for Starve Acre have been bought by House Productions at auction.
