March Book Group: “Everything Under” by Daisy Johnson

Our monthly book group has been running since 2012: come along and discuss books!

Our ever-popular, longest running book group runs on the last Tuesday of the month. Run by one of our booksellers, we want people to come and relax in the surrounds of the bookshop with a glass of wine, and enjoy discussing a book. It’s informal, illuminating and a lot of fun!

How it works
Reserve a space on the website for the next book group, or call/email/pop in to the shop to reserve a place.
Please let us know in plenty time if you can no longer attend so we can offer your place to someone else.
Please turn up on time so we can begin the discussion promptly.
Please read the book before coming!

In March we are discussing the Man Booker shortlisted novel Everything Under by Daisy Johnson.

About the book

It’s been sixteen years since Gretel last saw her mother, half a lifetime to forget her childhood on the canals. But a phone call will soon reunite them, and bring those wild years flooding back: the secret language that Gretel and her mother invented; the strange boy, Marcus, living on the boat that final winter; the creature said to be underwater, swimming ever closer.

In the end there will be nothing for Gretel to do but to wade deeper into their past, where family secrets and aged prophesies will all come tragically alive again.

‘Daisy Johnson is a new goddamn swaggering monster of fiction.’

— Lauren Groff

In February we are discussing the debut short story collection Her Body and Other Parties by American writer Carmen Maria Machado.

About the book

In her provocative debut, Carmen Maria Machado demolishes the borders between magical realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. A wife refuses her husband’s entreaties to remove the mysterious green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague spreads across the earth. A salesclerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery about a store’s dresses. One woman’s surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted house guest. A dark, shimmering slice into womanhood, Her Body and Other Parties is wicked and exquisite.

‘Impossible, imperfect, unforgettable’

— Roxane Gay

The Golden Hare Book Group

Looking to join a new book group, or always wondered about taking part in one?

Book groups are great fun, but often when done in sitting rooms with friends they can famously turn into wine groups. Nothing wrong with that, but the Golden Hare Book Group is very focused on talking about lots of different aspects of lots of different books (but don’t worry, we still have wine). You also don’t need to worry about joining a group where everyone knows each other, as we always welcome new faces as well as those who have been attending since we opened in 2012! It’s a great way to vary your reading and find out about other people’s tastes and perspectives.

On the last Tuesday of every month, the Golden Hare closes its doors to the public and opens exclusively to our Book Group members! Wine is served and we chat about the book for around an hour – it’s all very informal and friendly, but we do stick to the topic. We then choose a book for the next session by adding suggestions into a hat (NB: not an actual hat) which we then pull three suggestions from, discuss what we’d like to do next month, and voila!

Please check out the Golden Hare Book Group page on this website to find out what book is coming up next, and to see the books we’ve read previously!

At the moment there’s no need to book a place for attending the Book Group, just read the book and show up on the night – we always have wine, soft drinks, nibbles and insightful chat in abundance. And, if you’re a member of the bookgroup, you can get 15% off next month’s title when you buy it in-store! And soon you’ll be able to order online, too…

The People In The Trees by Hanya Yanagihara

£8.99

The stunning debut novel, from the author of A Little Life. It is 1950 when Norton Perina, a young doctor, embarks on an expedition to a remote Micronesian island in search of a rumoured lost tribe. There he encounters a strange group of forest dwellers who appear to have attained a form of immortality that preserves the body but not the mind.

Perina uncovers their secret and returns with it to America, where he soon finds great success. But his discovery has come at a terrible cost, not only for the islanders, but for Perina himself. Hanya Yanagihara’s The People in the Trees marks the debut of a remarkable new voice in American fiction.

Our bookseller David’s favourite book ever!
