About Hope Never Knew Horizon

Wexford County, 1891. In the Irish coastal town of Wexford, the unlikely discovery of a beached blue whale sets in motion a series of events leading to the present-day re-installation of a fundamental piece of London's Natural History Museum.

Amherst, Massachusetts, circa. 1850. Margaret O'Brien, the domestic help for the Dickinson family, happens upon a letter revealing an intimate secret about the reclusive Miss Emily and her brother's fiancé Susan Huntington.

London, circa. 1880. A young working-class woman named Ada Alice Pullen meets the esteemed painter Frederic Leighton, beginning a relationship that will transform her and the world of art forever. The stories of three renowned cultural objects associated with hope, each told from someone marginalised from their histories, Hope Never Knew Horizon explores what is meant by 'hope' and the lessons it can teach us about both the past and future.

About Douglas Bruton

Born in Edinburgh, Douglas spent most of his working life as an English and guidance teacher. Now retired, Douglas continues to reside in Scotland where he writes in his spare time. His writing has been published in various publications including Northwords Now, New Writing Scotland, Aestetica and The Irish Literary Review. His short stories have won competitions including Fish and The Neil Gunn Prize. Hope Never Knew Horizon is his third novel.
