A poor miller's daughter has developed a talent for spinning stories that are spellbinding and entirely untrue. But when one of Serilda's tales draws the attention of the devastating Erlking and his undead hunters, she finds herself swept away into a 'real' world of enchantment, where ghouls prowl the earth, and hollow-eyed ravens track her every move. The king locks Serilda in a castle turret and commands her to spin straw into gold, or be killed for telling falsehoods. The dangerous smirk on his face gives nothing away. In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious young man to her aid. And he agrees to help her, for a price.
